Have you had your roofing checked recently? As we move towards warmer days, the ice breaks up and causes weather-related problems like April showers. We all know how problematic it can be if the roof isn’t prepared for a sudden deluge.
When you’ve recently experienced some torrential rains, you should check your roof for damage. Here are some of the things that you should look out for:
-
Water stains on the ceiling – Water stains on the ceiling indicate a severe roofing leak. The problem with leaks is that they rarely flow straight down, so pinpointing the exact source of the leak will take a lot of work, in which case you should have it professionally inspected and repaired. Isolated leaks rarely require a complete roof replacement and in most cases only need proper repair work.
-
Granules in the runoff – For those with an asphalt shingle roof, check the rainwater runoff and check for granules. A few loose granules shouldn’t be a problem, as this is normal. A lot of granules, however, mean the shingles are deteriorating and will require replacement, and soon. Your shingles are likely at the end of their service life and will soon exhibit other problems like…
-
Curling, damaged, or missing shingles – Take a pair of binoculars and inspect your roof’s overall condition. Pay special attention to out-of-shape shingles. Curling or cupped shingles are old, and wouldn’t likely be able to withstand another deluge. Damaged or missing shingles increase the chances of letting rainwater into the roof deck and developing into leaks and will require roofing repairs. Note the first row of shingles along the roof’s edge as it’s prone to wind damage.
-
Damaged flashing – A simple rule of thumb is if it protrudes, inspect it: chimneys, plumbing vents, dormers, and even the skylights. The flashing should all be intact and, like the roofing material, should not display signs of damage.
-
Damaged gutters – Your gutters catch most of the brunt of that sudden rush of rainwater from April showers, so it’s more likely to sustain damage. Look for droopy or dislodged gutters, which will need to be fixed immediately. Rusted nailheads on the fascia indicate water infiltration, which will eventually lead to loose gutter hangers.
