Color selection is an important element of every residential roof replacement. Whatever color you ultimately choose will stay on your home for more than 20 years, so getting it right is important. The following are some of the things you should consider when choosing the roof color.
-
Roofing Material – Asphalt shingles and metal roofing are available in virtually any color, which gives you more latitude in choosing your roof color. However, if you are considering materials with natural colors, such as slate or tile, the color selection will be limited.
-
Architectural Style – Most architectural styles lend themselves well to a variety of color combinations. However, certain architectural styles look right with certain color palettes. For example, Mock Tudor houses typically have dark earth-tone colors that contrast with white walls. Another example is Mediterranean or Spanish architecture, typified by their red tile roofs.
-
Permanent Components – If your home has permanent components, such as brick or stone exteriors or prominent landscaping features, then they should be considered when choosing your residential roofing color. These components will likely outlast the roof, so making the latter play along with the former is the practical solution. This also goes for new components that have a similar lifespan as the roof, such as fiber cement siding that’s been installed within the past year.
-
Neighborhood Colors – You want a color palette that makes your home unique, yet blends in instead of sticking out like a sore thumb. Take a walk around your neighborhood, and take note of the roof colors in the area. There will be variations and outliers, but you should have an idea of the range of colors that your home should have by the time you get back.
-
Time of the Day – After some planning, you should have narrowed down your choice of colors. Ask your contractor if you can obtain color swatches, if not actual shingle samples. Some colors look different during certain times of the day, so you should test them in actual outdoor conditions. Simply place your samples against the siding, or prop them up on a window sill. Note which ones look good (and bad). Do this in the morning, at high noon, at sunset and in the evening. By the time you’re done with this exercise, you should have narrowed down your choices considerably.
