How do you tell if your roofing needs replacing? It’s not actually that easy to tell since roofs often hide existing problems and the warning signs aren’t always obvious. So what are the tell-tale signs that your roof needs replacing and what do they mean? Crown Roofing LTD , Ltd lists five that you need to watch out for.
1. Granules in the Gutters
A not-so obvious but tell-tale sign that your roofing may need replacing is the presence of granules in the gutters. These weird granules actually come from the shingles of your roofing, and it’s essentially the protective layer that’s been stripped off due to weathering and rain damage. Without these granules, your shingles are more likely to crumble and eventually fall off.
2. Roof Age
More granules on your gutters also mean that your roof’s nearing the end of its lifespan. A roof generally has a lifespan of 20 to 25 years, and this is without factoring elemental damage yet. 3. Water Stains on the Ceiling and Attic
Another tell-tale and rather alarming sign that your roof needs a check up is if you notice large and plentiful water stains on your home’s ceiling and attic space. This means that there’s a leak or leaks somewhere in the roofing that are large enough for plenty of water to seep in.
Generally, leaks only necessitate roofing repairs and not full-blown replacement – especially if the roof itself is relatively “young”. We highly recommend you have your roof inspected if you notice these water stains.
4. Light Coming Through The Roof Boards
Natural light is a welcome addition to any home, but not if it’s coming from the roof. Another clear sign that your roof needs replacing or repairing is if you notice light entering from the ceiling or attic space. It’s a rather obvious sign that there’s either a large leak or that the roof itself is damaged.
5. Buckling or Curling Shingles
If you notice your shingles curling or buckling, then it means that the shingles are way past their prime. We recommend you have us do an inspection on your roof and we’ll determine if it just needs re roofing or if replacement is necessary.
