Don’t throw out your old shingles just yet. You can still repurpose them into a doormat, a floor mat and even art. Here are some creative ideas for your old shingles.
Asphalt Shingle Doormat
A homemade doormat can add a bit of personality to your front porch.
-
Before assembling the doormat, make sure the rough part of the shingles is facing down.
-
Visualize what the doormat is supposed to look like and arrange the tiles in that shape.
-
Use hot glue to attach the pieces.
-
Afterward, paint the smooth part of the shingles. Using spray paint can make the task quicker and easier.
Slate Tile Flower Pots
Gray slate tile pots contrast nicely with vibrant ornamental shrubs and plants.
-
Look for four slate tiles that are about the same size.
-
Place them on top of each other. On each side, drill two holes that are about an inch apart.
-
Drill two holes on each side.
-
Attach a one by three inch rectangular piece of wood to each corner of the pot.
-
Attach a shingle to the bottom. Cut off parts of the shingle to make sure the bottom fits.
You can also place your old shingles around your plants to prevent weeds from popping up.
Clay Tile Artwork
Here’s a project where you can a bit more creative.
-
Wash off the dirt from the clay tiles, and wait for them to dry.
-
Apply primer, and then paint them.
Cost-Effective Walkways
If you want a more practical use for your old shingles, use them to create a walkway. For a sturdier walkway, lay the shingles down brick-style.
