The Underlayment
The shingles that make up the exterior of your roofing system are typically supported by the roof deck. This is a panel of plywood supported by a series of trusses and rafters. The roof deck can be especially prone to water penetration and, being primarily made of wood, can rot quite quickly. The underlayment is a waterproof material installed between the shingles and the roof deck to further improve the protection of your roof against moisture damage.
Types of Underlayment
In the past, asphalt-saturated felt was the most common type of underlayment there is. Today, however, non-bitumen synthetic felt has overtaken its place. Synthetic materials are affordable and extremely effective at keeping your roof waterproof. It’s also easier to install, which makes them the usual choice for many roofing professionals. There’s also rubberized asphalt, which offers plenty of the same advantages as synthetic felt but better. Unfortunately, it’s also usually more expensive.
