If you notice raccoons working their way up onto your roof, take immediate action. They can damage your home and cause health problems once they have access to your roof through your downspouts. Here are some ideas for keeping them away!
Clean Up Your Property
Raccoons climb into downspouts because they’re attracted to the resources on your property. These include food, water and shelter. If you remove these resources, raccoons will lose interest and look for another place. If you have pet food in your yard, be sure to remove it at the end of the day.
Remove Access
This includes modifying gutters and trimming trees that surround your home. You can also install pest guards, metal sheeting and down-facing funnels so that raccoons will be discouraged to pass through them.
Grease Your Downspouts
Apply automotive grease to a 24-inch section of your downspout to prevent raccoons from climbing up to the gutter. These critters need to hug downspouts to climb them. But if the surface is slippery, they won’t be able to go any further on the downspouts.
Set a Trap
You can safely trap adult raccoons without harming them. Once trapped, transport and release them in a nature center or state forest. Before doing this, make sure that there are no baby raccoons that will be left in the attic. Otherwise, they will starve and die, and cause another problem.
Use Raccoon Repellents
If none of the above worked for you, you can use repellents to keep raccoons from climbing your downspouts. These may include audible, chemical and electrical barriers.
