For some people, the attic is just an extra space in their homes where they can store unused items or which they can transform into another living area. While these are definitely great ways to utilize your attic space, it is important to keep in mind that your attic serves crucial functions, too.
For instance, the attic is designed to keep the heat in or out depending on the season. And, since it provides support to the roof as well, it should be maintained properly, and it should have good ventilation. Otherwise, it can cause problems in your roofing system due to all the heat.
How Attic Ventilation Works
Ventilation ensures that fresh air will be able to reach the attic space as the stale air escapes through the proper openings. Typically, ventilation is installed near the bottom of the attic space at the eaves or soffits (intake) and at the ridges of the attic space (exhaust). With this kind of design, air could circulate properly and help keep the temperature and humidity level in the attic at a steady level, regardless of the season.
That said, your roofing contractor should ensure balanced ventilation, meaning the intake and exhaust should allow for the same amount of airflow. If the exhaust is not designed properly, hot air won’t be able to escape. And, if there is no proper intake, air will only be able to circulate at the top of the attic space. This could leave stale air at the bottom of the attic.
How Attic Ventilation Can Keep Your Cooling Costs Low
Without proper ventilation and insulation in the attic, the heat would have nowhere to go but down into your home. This causes the temperature inside your home to rise, giving your air conditioner a hard time to cool down your interior. The tendency of many people is to turn up their AC, causing the system to use up more energy.
On the other hand, if your attic is well-ventilated, you can ensure good airflow and prevent heat from building up in your attic space. Hot air won’t get pushed down into your living spaces, so your AC won’t have to constantly be on full blast. This definitely helps lower your cooling expenses for the year.
