A roof installation project is disruptive, with all the noise, the installers and the trucks coming back and forth. Unfortunately, your neighbors will also have to put up with the same disruptions. Here are some tips on how you can win your neighbors over during a roof replacement project.
Before Installation Day
Once you have finalized your roofing plans and settled on the installation day, make it a point to pay your neighbors a visit. Talk to them about the scope of the project, how long it will take and what your plans are to make sure their property won’t be affected. Answer questions, and assure them that you will do your best to isolate the work within your property. Alternatively, prepare a heads-up letter containing the same information. It may not help alleviate the disruption, but it sure can win you points for courtesy.
During Installation
On the first day of installation, talk to the installation manager or team leader about your neighbors’ concerns, if any. Roofing installation should stop at a designated hour. A capable roofing contractor will take measures to ensure compliance with local building and construction laws as well as being considerate of your neighbors’ needs.
In the event that your neighbors do complain, let cool heads prevail, and address reasonable complaints. Certain things can’t be avoided, of course, like roof installation noise or the trucks. Once in a while, there would be neighbors who may end up making unreasonable complaints. If this is the case, ask the community board or a similar group to mediate.
After Installation
Take time to thank your neighbors personally for their patience. Bring a small gift, such as baked goods or a token of a similar value. Answer any questions they may have. Leave them knowing that when it’s their turn to have their roofs replaced, you’ll be as understanding as they have been.
