Your roof system is more than just the shingles that you see. In order to ensure a good roof design and a long-lasting roof, other parts or components need to be considered and included in your roof maintenance. These include the soffits and fascia.
You need to ensure that the soffits and fascia have proper venting.
Soffits and Fascia 101
Before anything else, let’s review what the soffits and fascia are. You probably see them multiple times a day without realizing what they are. But the fascia is the horizontal wood against the walls of your home, and it extends to the front of the roof’s overhang. Meanwhile, the soffits can be found under the fascia board or on the underside of the roof. For dormer roofs, soffits and fascia may also be placed under their separate eaves.
Soffits and fascia can be made of aluminum, vinyl or wood. It’s common for homes with vinyl siding to use vinyl soffits. But if you want the best ventilation for your roof, solid aluminum soffits and fascia are usually more recommended. They can improve water runoff for your gutter system, too.
Why Soffits and Fascia Need Venting
Soffits need proper ventilation to keep the air flowing beneath the roofing. Without venting, moisture will build up on the material and cause mold growth and fungus to rot the wood. Meanwhile, the fascia board with the attached soffits is responsible for protecting the area under the rafters from any damage that may be caused by debris, insects and rodents. It is also usually connected to the rain gutters.
That being said, any damage in the soffits caused by improper ventilation could spread or affect the other connected parts as well. Make sure that your soffits, fascia and gutter system are well-maintained. Have them cleaned twice a year so that dirt, leaves and other debris won’t accumulate and prevent the free flow of rainwater.
