The presence of frost on the roof decking is a sign that your attic has insulation or/and ventilation issues. It occurs when warm, moist air touches extremely cold roof decking. Frost can cause significant damage to your attic and build up when the temperatures are below 10 degrees. Dealing with this issue is not as easy as it seems because this type of leak is not actually a leak.
Plumbing Issues
If your roof is leaking in winter, check if the source is near plumbing fixtures or drain lines. The leak could be occurring due to damaged caulking, overflowed tubs, deteriorating shower pans or poor toilet wax rings. It would be best to contact a plumbing professional for an inspection. Like roof repairs, plumbing issues must be addressed immediately to avoid water damage in your home and increased utility bills.
Ice Dams
Ice dams are also a typical reason roofs leak in winter. Low-slope roofing systems are more prone to this issue because snow and ice drain slower than systems with a steeper pitch. The problem can occur due to poor roof insulation and ventilation. During the day, when it’s warmer, ice dams melt and then refreeze at night when temperatures drop. This repeated freeze-thaw cycle will cause water to penetrate beneath the shingles, leading to leaks.
